Moving a database to a new location on the same machine
Note: It is recommended that you create a backup of your database before proceeding with the steps in this section, as not doing so can lead to data loss should a loss of power to the computer occur while in the process of this move. For instructions on creating a backup of your database, refer to the following knowledgebase article:
How to back up and restore an Act! database

This process will move all database files from the current location on your machine to a new location in the same machine. This process will lock the database and require all users to use a new .PAD file to open the database.
Note: If you had any settings previously configured which required the database location in their settings, such as a database share, Microsoft Outlook Integration, Outlook synchronization, or Google Integration, those settings will need to be reconfigured with the database in its new location. For more information, refer to any of the articles in the Related Information section of this article which may apply to you.
Moving a database to a new location on a different machine
Important Note regarding remote synchronization: If the database you are moving to another computer is a main (publisher) database that remote databases synchronize to, or if the database you are moving to another computer is a remote database, additional steps are required in order to ensure that synchronization is retained after the database has been moved. This process will create a special backup file of the database, called an ACTMOV file which you can use to restore to a different machine while leaving the database in its original location, but in a locked state so that users will be unable to access it. All users will be required to use a new .PAD file to open the database.

- Ensure all other users are logged out of the database
- Login to your database as an Act! Administrator, then click File > Move Database > Prepare and Complete a Move on this Computer…
- In the Move Database Assistant screen, click Next to proceed
- In the Database Location window, click Browse…
- Select the folder on your computer where you want to move the database, then click OK
- Enter the Administrator logon information, then click Next to start moving the database to the new location
- When the move is complete and the Details window appears, click Finish
- Click File > Open/Share Database, select the database, then click Open to access the database in its new location

Preparing the move:
- Login to the database as an Act! Administrator, then Click File > Prepare a Move to Another Computer…
- In the Move Database Assistant screen, click Next
- Click Browse…, then browse to the location you’d like to save the ACTMOV file
- In the File name field, type the name you wish to name the ACTMOV file, then click Save
- Click Next in the Move Database Assistant window to start creating the ACTMOV file
- When the ACTMOV file creation is complete and the Details window appears, click Finish
- Move the ACTMOV file to the new machine using external storage, such as a flash drive or external hard drive
Completing the move on the other computer:
- After you have copied the ACTMOV file to the other computer, launch Act!, then click File > Move Database > Complete a Move from Another Computer
- In the Move Database Assistant screen, click Next
- Next to the Database file field, click Browse…
- Browse to and select the ACTMOV file, then click Open
- Under the field for the Location on this computer where you want to keep the database, click Browse…
- Select the folder on your computer where you want to restore the database, then click OK
- Enter the Administrator log on information, then click Next to begin restoring the database
- When the file restore is complete and the Details window appears, click Finish
- Click File > Open/Share Database, select the database, then click Open to access the database in its new location
