About the Act! serial number tolerance limit
The Act! CRM Software contains enforcement technology that limits the ability to use the software on multiple computers.
When you purchase Act! you are allocated a serial number which relates to a number of users. Swiftpage anticipates that customers will wish to install the software on a server (or machine acting as a server ) and potentially to install the software on a desktop and laptop/tablet per user. To allow for this the number of times a serial number can be used to successfully activate the software has an additional number of instances added to the number of users. This is known as the serial number’s tolerance and calculated as 2 x number of users + 1. For example a 5 user serial number would be able to be activated 11 times (2 x 5 users + 1 additional activation).
If you attempt to activate an Act! installation more times than the tolerance allows then you will be unable to do so and receive a message stating either that you have reached your activation limit or are unable to activate (the exact message will vary based on the type of serial number and version of product).
There are some instances in which you may need to be able to activate additional installations, such as replacing machines or reinstalling after the machine has had its operating system reinstalled. In these instances Swiftpage can increase the tolerance to allow for the activation to be successfully carried out. Instances where you are reinstalling on the same machine is counted as a re-activation and does not impact the tolerance limit.
Note: The tolerance on a serial number can be increased only up to the original limit on that serial number e.g. a 10 user customer cannot receive a 15 user tolerance reset, the maximum number of activations that could be added would be 10.
How to increase the serial number tolerance limit
Act users with active subscriptions or perpetual licences for supported versions of Act!
If you have an active Act! Premium or Act! Premium Cloud subscription, or you are using one of our supported versions on a perpetual licence, your tolerance can be increased without additional charge provided you are using the software in line with our End User Licence Agreement. To request an increase to your tolerance then please contact the Customer Success team for your country.
Act! users without an active subscription who are using an unsupported version of Act!
If you do not have an Act! subscription and are using an unsupported version of the Act! software then there will be a nominal charge to increase the tolerance of the serial number. This is to cover the costs to Swiftpage involved in additional activations. This charge is payable before the tolerance is increased.
Note: Information on supported versions of Act! can be found in the following article:
The charge will be a fixed amount that will be applied in multiples, depending on the number of users your company needs to activate at the time of the request, and the tolerance cannot be increased more than you are licensed overall. The charges will be $25 USD, £25 GBP, 25 EUR, $30 AUD or $30 NZD depending on the currency you're billed in and will be applied in the following multiples user count:
1-10 users: quantity 1 x fixed regional charge
11-50 users: quantity 2 x fixed regional charge
50+ users: quantity 3 x fixed regional charge
For example, an Act! user in Australia who only has a single user license would be charged $30 AUD (1 x $30 AUD) to increase their serial number tolerance, an Act! user in the UK who has 12 user licenses would be charged £50 (2 x £25), and an Act! user in the US who has 80 user licenses would be charged would be charged $75 (3 x $25).
