ACT! 2006 provides the ability to customize Opportunity fields. You cannot create new or delete existing Opportunity fields; however, there are eleven opportunity fields that can be renamed to identify customized data used when creating Opportunities.
If you are using the ACT! Premium For Workgroups edition, you can now change the Data Type, Customize field behavior, assign a Default Value and/or create a Field format. ACT! (Standard) for Windows edition does not provide these features. You will only be able to modify the Opportunity Field name in that edition of the ACT! software.
It is strongly recommended that you create a current backup (or copy) of your database before following the steps below. For detailed information on creating a database backup file, refer to the following Knowledge Base Answer:

Use the following steps to manage the Opportunity user fields.
Note: You must have administrative access to the database to complete the steps below:
- Click the Tools menu, and then click Define Fields. The Define Fields - Create, edit or delete fields dialog box appears:
Note: The Competitor, Reason, and Source Referred By opportunity fields can also be modified, but it is recommended that you leave these with their default names and settings.
- Ensure Opportunities is selected from the View fields for drop-down list.
- Click the opportunity field you want to modify, and then click Edit field. The Enter field name and type dialog box appears:
- Modify the Field name (if desired).
- ACT! Premium for Workgroups users only:
- Click into the Select a field data type to convert to: window and then click a different data type (if desired). Available field data types include:
Caution: Modifying the field data type may cause a loss of existing field data.
- Modify the Customize field behavior options as desired, and then click Next. If you modify field data type, the following ACT! warning appears:
- If you are certain that you will not lose data by modifying the field data type, click Yes. The Customize field behavior dialog box appears:
- Click into the Select a field data type to convert to: window and then click a different data type (if desired). Available field data types include:
- Enter a Default value (optional) (data that you wish to automatically populate this field on all new opportunities), enter a Field format and/or adjust the Field length (if desired).
Note: The per cent symbol (%) functions as a place holder for a Field format.
Caution: Reducing Field length may cause a loss of existing data. - Click Finish. Field triggers cannot be established for opportunity fields. The Create, Edit or delete fields dialog box re-appears. Click Close or repeat steps 2 - 6 as desired.
