This can occur if the system times out before the stop or pause has completed.
Option 1 – End the process
- Open the Windows Task Manager and go to the Processes tab
- Select sqlservr.exe, then click End Process
- When prompted to confirm that you wish to end the process, click End process
Option 2 – Restart
- Restart your computer
- Attempt to stop the service again to test
