Important Note: If your databsae size exceeds 10GB and you are using Microsoft SQL Server Express, it is recommended that you speak to your IT department or technical support before proceeding with the steps below. Due to limitations on database size when using Microsoft SQL Server Express, you may not be able to reattach your database after detaching it.

- Close Act! and ensure all other users are logged out of the database
- On your keyboard, press your Windows key + R
- Depending on your version of Act!, type one of the following, then press Enter:
- 2007 and later: actdiag
- 2006: act8diag
- 2005: act7diag
- In the Act! Diagnostics Utility, click Databases > Database List
- Click the gray rectangle on the left side of your database name to select the entire row displaying your database information
- Scroll to the right until you see the File Path column, then make a note of the file path in the highlighted row (so that it can be found later if reattaching is needed)
- Scroll back to the left, then right click the gray rectangle to the left side of your database name, then select Detach Database
